This Winter, Ashgate Hospicecare’s Light Up A Life appeal returns to give supporters the opportunity to celebrate the life of a loved one.
The appeal, which is now in its 17th year, has raised over £650,000 for patient care since it first began in 2002. Those who donate to the appeal will have the opportunity to light up a star in Ashgate Hospicecare’s virtual night sky and have a star with their message on displayed on the Christmas tree at the hospice. The stars will not only shine brightly for loved ones, they will also represent so much more, as every single penny raised from donations will help those within the North Derbyshire community to receive hospice care when they need it most.
Liz, from Brimington, and her family received vital support at home after her dad was diagnosed with skin cancer. She said, “My dad was diagnosed with skin cancer in January 2016 and after over a year of regular trips to the hospital and lots of treatment, it all became too much. My mum and I realised that we needed extra support so that we could continue to care for my dad at home. A referral was put through to Ashgate Hospicecare and my dad started to be seen regularly at home by Sharon, a Specialist Nurse.
When she first came to see him, he was frightened. But Sharon tried to reassure him by saying, ‘The hospice isn’t just for people who are dying, the hospice is for those who need support. I can come out to your home anytime you need me, whether that’s once a week or once a month, and I can give you and your family whatever support you need. You don’t have to come into the hospice if you don’t want to.’ Sharon knew that she needed to introduce the hospice slowly to my dad, but before long, he started to warm to Sharon and looked forward to her visits.
For me and mum, it was great to have Sharon as a point of contact. We felt very well supported having her there to ask any questions to. Knowing that we could phone Ashgate seven days a week and ask for support was like having a safety net beneath us.When dad started to get more ill, all I wanted to do was give him the dose of medicine he needed. I explained my frustrations to Sharon and she ensured that we could always get the pain relief that he needed. This was invaluable in the last few days of dad’s life.
Thanks to the support of the hospice, dad was able to die peacefully at home, where he wanted to be.We wanted what everybody else wants; for my dad to have a peaceful death and to not be in pain. Thanks to Ashgate Hospicecare, dad had as ‘good’ a death as he could have and we’re really grateful for that.”
