Councillor Martin Thacker MBE, Chairman of North East Derbyshire District Council and Vice-Chairman of Chesterfield F.C., has been busy raising vital funds for Ashgate Hospicecare after choosing the hospice as his charity of the year.
To help Ashgate fund its vital care for patients and their loved ones across North Derbyshire, Councillor Thacker has filled his calendar with fundraising activities – so far raising thousands in less than three months.
Among the events to have taken place recently included a charity football match at Chesterfield Football Club’s Technique Stadium on 17 June. The game took place between local construction specialists Morgan Sindall FC and Jewson Property Professionals FC.
Councillor Thacker, also Director of Chesterfield Football Community Trust, helped to organise the fixture with Morgan Sindall’s Richard Harding and raised more than £12,000 towards our care.
Peter Stone, Director of Income Generation at Ashgate, said, “We are so grateful for this incredibly generous donation and the support of Councillor Thacker, especially after the challenging 18 months we have all faced.
“Throughout the pandemic, Ashgate worked around the clock to deliver our care and services to families across North Derbyshire living with a life-limiting illness. In fact, we are one of the few hospices in the UK which cared for end-of-life COVID patients.
“The specialist care and support we offer is only possible because of the kind generosity and support of people in our local community. I would just like to reiterate our sincere thanks to all those involved in the charity football match and for raising such a huge amount of money.”
Other upcoming events organised by Councillor Thacker, with support from his Consort Jean Spencer, include:
- Village Gems Walk at Holymoorside Village Hall (Sunday 25 July, 9am)
- Charity Cricket Match at Queens Park (Tuesday 25th August)
- Abba Tribute Night at Chesterfield F.C. (Friday 10th September)
- Golf Day at College Pines Golf Course, Worksop (Thursday 16th September)
- Brass Band Concer with Ireland Colliery Band at St John’s Church in Walton (Friday 8th October)
Councillor Thacker said: “I’m delighted to be able to support Ashgate Hospicecare during my year as Chairman of the council. It’s been a fantastic start to our fundraising this year – a big thank you everyone who has made it so successful already.
“We have plenty of events planned for the rest of the year, hopefully we can continue raising some much-needed funds so Ashgate can support the patients and families who need the hospice’s support across North Derbyshire.”
