My name is Sarah Kerry, I am the Day Services Manager at Ashgate Hospicecare.
There have been a lot of changes and developments to help us manage the current Covid-19 outbreak. Anybody who enters the main hospice building is being screened and temperature checked before they enter, we have restricted visitors to the hospice and any staff that can possibly work offsite are doing so. Our main priority has been infection control and making sure our patients, their families, our staff and volunteers, and the wider community are safe.
Due to the ongoing situation, we made the decision to close our Day Hospice. As a service, we are now contacting patients by telephone regularly to keep up to date with them and look at new ways we can support them whilst they’re in isolation. It’s very strange not to have the face to face contact with our Day Hospice patients but they are all really understanding of the situation and very supportive of the care we are providing. To me, that is just amazing. How my team has been able to adapt and how they have altered their roles to help our patients and their families have just been incredible.
There are extremely challenging times ahead but there are some great positives shining through. I think the teamwork at the hospice and people’s commitment and hard work is evident. People are being extremely adaptable, extremely supportive, and extremely caring. Despite being in for a difficult ride ahead, it is lovely to know that we’ll support each other and do our very best to keep everyone as safe as possible.
We need the public’s help now more than ever. A lot of our fundraising plans and events have been postponed and our shops have had to shut. That’s a massive part of our income generation that is no longer available to us. We need your help and support now more than ever and every generous donation is going to be vital at this really difficult time.
I am very proud of our team; I am very proud of my colleagues and I am very proud of our service. We’re in this together and we’re going to do everything we can to support those who need us the most.
Our specialist support has never been more in demand. We urgently need your help to support friends and family within our community. Please donate now.
