Ashgate Gardens

Volunteer – Horticultural Therapy Assistant

The Horticultural Therapy Project started at Ashgate 18 months ago. New garden areas have been developed to include a poly tunnel, patio area, greenhouse and raised benches.   We have decorated plant pots, grown carrots, beetroots, radish, potatoes, tomatoes and sweet peas from seed and produced a sea garden. We are hoping to expand our Horticultural Therapy offer and are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who can help us achieve this.

Horticultural Therapy volunteers are involved in a wide variety of activities associated with the care and maintenance of the poly tunnel, patio area, greenhouse and raised benches; together with assisting the Occupational Therapists and patients.

Activities include:

  • Assisting patients with activities including sowing seeds, planting and pruning.
  • Assisting in setting-up and delivery of Horticultural Therapy activities.
  • Providing companionship, socialising and engaging in conversation with patients to help support their emotional wellbeing.
  • Weeding beds and tubs, pruning and planting.
